I have a friend named Jeff Sewall. I heard that the Sewells that changed their name from Sewall were ashamed of judge Sam Sewall, and in an effort to hide, changed the A to an E. That true?
I have no idea... my parents are big into genealogy, sounds like the kind of thing they would know. I do know that "Sewell" is a pretty common name in the southeastern United States and in England. It seems a bit of a stretch that all "Sewell's" everywhere go back to one "Sewall" who didn't like another "Sewall." But stranger things have happened.
Seems more likely to me that "Sewall" and "Sewell" are variations on the same same. Standardized spelling of non-roayalty surnames is pretty recent and different regional accents could easily explain the spelling variance.
Maybe Google knows more?
